Tel Aviv kicks off Earth Hour 2008

March 24th, 2008 · 2 Comments

It all started with one question: How can people be inspired to take action on climate change? The answer was to ask the people of Sydney to turn off their lights for one hour, and so on March 31st 2007, 2.2 million people and 2100 Sydney businesses turned off their lights for one hour; the Earth Hour.

Today the Earth Hour campaign has gained global attention, and as a result at 8pm on March 29th, 2008, millions of people in some of the world’s major capital cities will unite and switch off for Earth Hour. Tel Aviv will be the kick off city world wide, as it will be turning off lights on Thursday March 27, 2008, at 20:00 due to the Jewish Sabbath.

Since I know Tlv, I’m sure in this is going to be some event. This is because Tlv is the kind of city where any reason, even a political or ecological matter, is a reason for a celebration! I can’t wait to walk around when everything is pitch dark and feel the city at it’s most natural. So this is the plan: If you’re some how connected and know the right people, you might be able to get tickets to an exclusive cocktail party taking place on the roof of the Azrieli tower at 19:30.

If not, come meet the rest of us common people at Kikar Rabin and watch an amazing acoustic show given by the famous Knesiyat Haseshel (Church of the Mind), an Israeli rock band, originally from Sderot. Knesiyat Hasehel is one of the more Israeli Israeli bands, what I mean is they’re the kind of band that really started from nothing, with a very different music style, but slowly and gradually found their way into the Israeli consensus.

I think the best proof of their extraordinary status is the fact that their current show “Autobiography” is a huge and extremely invested production that includes 40 musicians playing classical and ethnic instruments, and is played at the most mainstream venues, such as The Caesarea Amphitheatre and the Cultural Hall of Tel Aviv.

All the energy needed for this show’s stage and the minimal lighting required for safety will come from renewed and alternative energy sources, including a cycling site that produces energy from cyclists riding on the spot.

If music is not your thing, take a date and go for a candle light dinner at one of the many restaurants planning on shutting down the power and giving their dinners a real romantic experience.

I think no matter what, this is a night to be outside, walking around, hanging out and letting the city lead you.

Let me know where you ended up…
