The 5 Best Shopping Areas in Tel Aviv

April 1st, 2008 · 3 Comments

Ok, so I’m not going to try and convince you that Tel Aviv is the fashion capital of the world, we all know Paris or Milan have much more style and chic going for them. And still I argue that there are a few great shopping areas in town and some very talented and creative Israeli designers popping up. I apologize in advance, since this post is going to be a bit on the girly side, but I promise to make it up to the guys some other time.

Kikar Masarik
This is my home turf spending zone. It’s actually a bit of a problem, because every time I leave the house, just to walk my dog, I’m drawn to this area and I just have to see what’s new. Masarik has its unique variety of designer stores - they don’t have the same ownership but they do have the same style and feel to them. They’re all small with very fine and clean interior design. The clothing is mostly casual wear, with a lot of neutral colors, amazing soft fabrics and flowing fits. Some of the stores also carry classy hands bags and very interesting shoes. My favorites stores are Mayu, Anna K and Shine, all located within the same radius. When you’re tired of shopping take a minute to stop at the delicious Boutique Central for a cappuccino and an unbelievable almond croissant.

Kikar Hamedina
Kikar Hamedina, other wise known as the “Circle”, is the most exclusive and pricey place to shop in TLV. If you’re married to a rich Russian oligarch or you just got your yearly bonus, you’re welcome to try your luck here. The Circle has quite a respectable selection of foreign designers such as Gucci, Ralph Lauren, LouisVutton and most of the other known brands, but for the complete personal stylist effect I recommend visiting one of these special stores: Helga Designs and Enigma. Both stores are run by two very fashionable ladies who visit the all the right fashion shows and literally hand pick the items sold in the store.

North Dizengoff Street
If your visiting TLV there is no way in the world you won’t visit Dizengoff Street, but the real secret is knowing the right end of this street to be on, which is of course the north end (Ben Gurion Boulevard and Northward).
Here you can find elegant, young and fun apparel, footwear and tons of accessories. This is the place to shop if you searching for the perfect dress to wear to your best friend’s wedding, especially at the stores Yosef, Katumenta or Banker, and also if you just want to pamper yourself with something new. Prices here are definitely not cheap but they are also not beyond reach. The only thing you need to look out for is the huge amount of future brides taking over the street, since this is also the most popular place for wedding dresses!

Gan Hahasmal
The Gan Hahasmal area is a rather new attraction. It started out from a store here and there, and then one day, on my way back from yoga class, I suddenly realize I’m surrounded by about twenty little cute boutiques of some very hip, cutting age Israeli designers. Nowadays this is a fun place for both normal shopping but also for window shopping while admiring the crazy looking mannequins and the impressing displays. My favorite place is called the Closet, it’s an amazingly unique store with a nostalgic feel to it - when you walk in you get a 1940’s sensation and the store is usually filled with skirts and dress that you could only find in your grandmother’s closet, with small funky features that give them just the right twist.

Ramat Aviv Mall
I’m not the type of gal that would recommend a visit to the mall for the ultimate shopping experience, yet there is still something about this specific mall that does it for me. I think it’s because I grew up right near by, so I have this strange sense of loyalty to it. Here you can find all the Israeli chains and most of the foreign ones, some more and some less expensive, under one roof. If you look real close there are also a few surprising stores, like a place called Exit, which sports a window display that hardly draws you in, but I’m telling you - it’s worth it. I bought my favorite pair of slutty jeans for about a hundred shekels ten years ago. All and all if have to visit a mall it might as well be this one.
