What to do for the Passover Seder in Tel Aviv

April 16th, 2008 · No Comments

Passover is right around the corner and chances are that you already have some obligations and commitments for the big Passover Seder. But if some how you managed to escape the many invites from all of your distant relatives and other strangers that just insist you come eat with them, you might be able to enjoy a different Seder experience around Tlv… I wish I was so lucky…

The Kabbalah Seder
If it’s good enough for Madonna, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, it’s probably good enough for you! Try experiencing the Seder in a more spiritual atmosphere at the Tlv Kabbalah Center. According to the Kabbalah, the purpose of Passover is to give the universe the endless energy of giving and togetherness, so here is your chance to take part in a mystic event filled with festive chanting and calming meditation. It will surely be a Seder to remember. Kikar Dizengoff (near Chen Theatre), starting at 19:00.

The Hotel Seder
The Hotel Seder is a very popular trend in Tlv. The Tel Avivian enjoys being fully pampered with a 5 course meal including all the traditional food (just that it’s much better then the typical polish mother in law makes it) like the Gefilte fish, the Knidalach and many more surprises that can make a fun and fancy Seder experience. My recommendation would be Hilton Tlv, since they really know how to do it right, but most of the Tlv hotels will have Seder going on. Be aware that this is one expensive delight!

The Stay at Home Seder
So it’s not a fancy or dressy event, but if you prepare properly, it can be the perfect solution. It can be in a romantic set up or with some friends whowere also freed from the family event. Either way all you need is some good jewish take out and a few Israeli Movies. I think the perfect combination is the all time classic “Givaat Halfon” with some of the wonderful cuisine of the very Israeli Sheked Restaurant (03-5610546), or you can try watching “Leilasede“, an Israeli movie that tells the story of a the Seder night in a commen Israeli family, and ordering from the one and only Batia Café (03-5221335).The Desert Seder
This Seder will require you to leave the city, an effort I’m not sure everybody is up for, but if you have the energy you can visit Zman Midbar, an ecological and spiritual center in the Aravva area (www.zmanmidbar.net) Here a shanty, casual uplifting Seder will be taking place. The Seder will be held in the tea house of the center, a vegetarian meal will be served, the traditional Passover Hagada will be sang and accompanied with musical instruments, and various activities for kids will take place. All and all sounds like a promising event, I’d give it a shot of I was a free person!

The Dita Seder
If all this Seder bullshit doesn’t speak to you at all, and all you want is to enjoy some normal food, Dita is the solution. Dita will be serving their regular daily menu with no annoying holiday specials getting in the way. Be sure to order the Buffalo Wings and the Carpaccio Salad , my absolute favorites. Dita, 45 Rothschild St, 03-5604222.
