Tel Aviv’s Student Film Festival

May 29th, 2008 · No Comments

This weekend Tel Aviv has the pleasure of hosting the12th International Student Film Festival, which is one of the largest festivals in the world for student films and considered one of the most important in this field.

Every two years, in the beginning of the summer, many students, lecturers and guests from the cinema industry meet in Tlv for a week of interesting, unique and fresh cinema. The coolest part is that the festival is 100% run and produced by students, mostly from Tlv University, so the whole gathering has a fun and independent kind of feel to it, which just makes you want to pack up and move to Hollywood. Another fun part is that it is a pretty cheap outing, 25 shekels a ticket, 50 shekels for a daily pass and 150 shekels for the whole event.

One of the highlights of the event is definitely the international competition. It is the largest competition in the world for student films. This year there will be 86 schools from 50 different countries participating in it, which is an absolutely incredible number! At the end of the competition, a committee consisting of some serious movie buffs, will chose the most promising filmmakers and films.

For the full schedule and special screening check out (http://www.taufilmfest.com), I can assure you that it will be difficult to decide which movies to see so you will just have to bet on something.
I’m actually planning on checking some of the midnight screenings that are dedicated to student films made by some of the most famous directors in the world, what a cool concept!

As I mentioned before (see the Tel Aviv Movie Theatre Scene) the Tlv Cinematheque is a great hang out, primarily because it has a big open space in front of it which is always taken advantage of when events are going on, so be ready for some fun food and alcohol stands and maybe even a few improvised street performances.

In addition, the Cinematheque is right on HaArbaa St, which is a very good street for dining. Depending on your mood, budget and appetite, you can choose from The very fancy and stylishin Messa restaurant (14 HaArbaa St ), the fun and easy going Tapeo tapas bar (16 HaArbaa St ), Pasha (8 HaArbaa St ), a Turkish spot with more conman dining, and many more options.

Tlv Cinematheque, 2 Shprinzak St., corner of HaArbaa St, 31.5- 7.6.
