I’ve been living in the infamous triangle of Shinkein- King George- Allenby streets for a couple of years now, but only a few days ago it occured to me that I live in the middle of the Kawasan St.
For the few people that don’t know what I’m talking about, The Kawasan Street is the Israeli’s street in the middle of noisy Bangkok The thing is that almost every Israeli that has been to Thailand and lands in Bangkok, goes to the same place. This simple fact created a colorful, noisy and crowed street that is full of tourists but mostly of Israelis.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the Kawasan, I love the busy atmosphere, all the tourists in the streets, the shopping.. Maybe that is the atmosphere that some how brought me to live in the Israeli Kawasan.
It all began on a very hot day, the kind of day in which you can wear only a very light dress and you probably wear your swimsuit underneath so that you can go have a dip in any cool waters you can find.
It continued with a day-off I had that gave me the opportunity to travel around my neighborhood and due to the fact that the Tlv summer fills the streets with tourists!! I felt that I was back at my favorite spot - the Kawasan.
So here are my recommendations for the Israeli Kawasan day that will almost bring you back to the coolest (or should I say hottest) street.
As I mentioned, you should wear your swimsuit and very light clothes, because it is soooo hot. The real advantage of the Israeli Kawasan is that is right next to the beach, so you can get cool whenever you feel that it is too hot for you (not like the original Kawasan where you need to take the flight, or worse, the night bus, in order to get into the water).
You should open the day with a fresh juice from a mix of the great Israeli fruits. Just check out one of the 5 fresh juice stands that are located all over Shienkin St. I prefer the banana-pineapple combination, just like I had in Bangkok every morning, but you can try whatever you have in mind because these guys have everything!!!
After you filled your stomach, you should do some shopping the Thai way. Just go to the Carmel Market, buy some Longi (the nice sheets for the beach) or cheap clothes (there is a great stand of underwear), but don’t forget to bargain (everybody knows the famous Thai phrases -” I lose money” and “same same but different”).
Continue to King George St. and to Allenby St.; there are lots of cheap cheap shops where you continue the Thai illusion.
At 30 Allenbi St. you will find a nice hostel called Mugraby Hostel. I’ve never tried the rooms but they have a really cute Internet café that will make you feel in the middle of the Far East.In additions, the people who are working there who are extremely nice, make me smile every time I enter the place. (I know that Internet cafés are “so 90s’” but you have to admit that there is something special about these places).
Im sure that you will be tired at this point so I recommend you to continue a bit more to the end of Allenby st., grab a cool beer and watch the sunset.. You’ll probably meet some nice Israelis just as you were in the original Kawasan.
